Zugzwang

Zugzwang (German: "compulsion to move") is a situation where any move a player makes worsens their position. If they could pass, they would, but chess requires a move each turn. Zugzwang is most common in king and pawn endgames.

Example

  • In a king and pawn endgame, the side not in opposition is in zugzwang — every king move loses a pawn.
