Back rank mate

A back rank mate occurs when a rook or queen delivers checkmate on the first or eighth rank. The king is trapped by its own pawns and cannot escape. The most common version involves a rook sliding to the back rank when the defending king has no "luft" (escape square).

Example

  • Rxd8+ forces Rxd8, then Re8# — a classic back rank combination.
